Kickoff to Commencement

Kickoff to Commencement is set for May 9, at the Joe Johnson/John Ward Pedestrian Mall. The event is being held to honor all spring and summer graduates.

A committee of students and staff has been planning this alternative to the university-wide commencement ceremony as a way to officially begin the series of college-based graduations and offer a great mix of UT’s traditions as well as relaxed fun.

UT alumnus and country music artist Deana Carter will deliver a special concert for all graduates and their guests in the Humanities amphitheater. The outdoor concert is the perfect opportunity to bring a blanket and relax on the lawn while listening to the CMA-award winning and Grammy-nominated performer who has agreed to take time out of her busy schedule to ensure that this evening is a memorable one for you our graduates and your family. Throughout her performance, she will also share some of her own fond UT memories.

At the request of the Student Government Association, the event will begin with the revival of a historic UT tradition. Aloha Oe — the companion ceremony to Torch Night — is the candlelight ceremony for seniors that signifies their continuing journey and reminds them of their pledge to serve the university and their community. All graduates are encouraged to attend and gather at the Torchbearer at 5:30 p.m. to be part of the comeback of this meaningful ceremony.

After the ceremony, the program and concert will get underway at 6 p.m. in the heart of campus — the Pedestrian Mall. A casual dinner will be served and graduates will also receive special gifts along with a few other surprises.
