Overview of Templates

Like the previous version of the template, the "new look" is essentially divided into three sections: a header, a content area, and a footer. One new addition is the orange, horizontal navigation bar, which we've called "department" in the code.

The following is an explanation of the requirements issued by the Office of Creative Services. Individual colleges and departments may establish additional branding and/or design requirements of their own.

Header

The only element of the header that you should edit is the title image, which is 720x65 pixels and which should be labeled with the name of your college, department, or unit and linked to your home page. Click "UT Knoxville Web Templates" in the top-right corner of this page to see how it should work.

Because it's a tricky aspect ratio, we've provided some standard title images (see How To), but you are free to use background images and fonts of your choosing.

Department

The department navigation bar has two sections. The dark orange button beneath the UT Knoxville wordmark should be labeled with the name of your college, department, or unit and linked to your home page. The lighter orange section can be used either as a form of "breadcrumb navigation" or as a place to highlight frequently-used tools and links specific to your site.

Content

Creative Services' only mandate for the content area (everything between the two orange lines) is that you stay within the fixed width of 960 pixels. Everything else is up for grabs.

Please post contact information on your home page, including a mailing address, phone/fax numbers, and an email contact.

Knowing that units across campus have widely varying levels of web support, we have created several themes that can be easily and immediately implemented. This site, for example, uses the "simple" theme. Each theme uses a 240 pixel left-column menu -- and we suggest that you do the same -- but even that is not required. Really, we encourage your creativity. But, again, please be aware that your college or department may have established additional design requirements.

Footer

The styling of the footer is defined by the primary style sheet (global.css), which you should have no reason to edit. However, feel free to add additional content to the HTML -- for example, department contact information.
