Just in time for Halloween, the hit musical “Little Shop of Horrors” will play in the Clarence Brown Theatre’s Carousel Theatre October 29 through November 15. It is sponsored by Mardini Media and Stowers Machinery Corporation.

Based on the low budget 1960 “B” movie directed by Roger Corman, this extremely goofy musical is part sci—fi, part black comedy, part Faustian legend and a whole lot of fun. Set in the early 1960’s Skid Row, the down and out characters dream of “getting out” one day. When floral shop attendant, Seymour, finds an unusual plant, the floral shop begins to flourish. Then Seymour discovers the plant needs blood to grow. The plant promises Seymour fame and fortune if he will feed him what he needs. Seymour agrees and a tragic Faustian series of events ensure. Throw in a little romance, a sadistic Elvis—like dentist, a singing and dancing plant and a “Supremes—like” girl group and you have the recipe for a funny terror—filled evening. The music in the production is a catchy combination of Motown, gospel, rhythm and blues and 60’s rock and roll influenced tunes. This production contains fog, strobe lights and material that may not be suitable for young children.

“The story, and I think the music most of all, has made its way into the hearts of many people. It’s certainly not a coincidence that the creators of this show—Alan Mencken and Howard Ashman—went on to create amazing music and lyrics for some of Disney’s newer classics such as “Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast,” and “The Little Mermaid.” The show is a little gem, albeit a dark and creepy one, that seems to delight and appeal to our darker sides,” said director and choreographer Terry Silver—Alford.

Terry Silver—Alford is a member of the UT Theatre faculty and teaches Musical Theatre Performance, Introduction to the Theatre and Acting.
November 09, 2009 - Film: Invisible Children

Invisible Children is an organization based out of San Diego,
California that works with the people of war—torn Northern Uganda.
There has been a civil war raging there for over 20 years, and the
leaders are finishing up peace talks. However, during this war the
rebel army abducted children and brainwashed them to be soldiers that
viciously attacked the Acholi people in Uganda. In the wake of this
war, thousands of abducted children need to be rehabilitated into
society and millions of Ugandans have been forced into Internally
Displaced Persons Camps. Invisible Children has inspired high school
and college age students across America to raise $$2 million to rebuild
10 schools in Uganda that had been attacked. But their work is far from
done.

Right now, Invisible Children has about 10 Road Crews
that travel around America to schools, churches, and communities to
share the plight of the Invisible Children. The "Roadies" will be
speaking about the war and the current peace process, screening their
latest film about IDP Camps, and hosting a Q and A session. This is a
great opportunity to hear from people who work in the in the San Diego
office and have traveled to Uganda to see the problems first hand.
November 09, 2009 - Idan Raichel Project

The Idan Raichel Project Presented by the UT Cultural Attractions Committee

The Idan Raichel Project (Hebrew: הפרוייקט של עידן רייכל) burst onto
Israel’s music scene in 2002, changing the face of Israeli population
music and offering a message of love and tolerance that strongly
resonated in a region of the world where headlines are too often
dominated by conflict. With an enchanting blend of African, Latin
American, Caribbean, Ethiopian, and Middle Eastern sound fused with
Hebrew texts, the Idan Raichel Project has become one of the most
unexpected success stories in Israeli music history.

While
most of the Israeli labels considered his work to be too “ethnic” and
too outside the norms of the formulaic Israeli pop scene, one A&R
man, Gadi Gidor at Helicon Records, instantly heard the potential in
Idan’s work and quickly signed him on to the roster. The subsequent
album was an immediate hit. The haunting Ethiopian chorus of the first
single, “Bo’ee” (Come With Me), sounded completely unlike anything most
Israelis had heard before, yet, coupled with Idan’s richly poetic
lyrics of love and devotion and sophisticated production techniques,
the single was a huge success. The album went on to sell over 150,000
copies (triple platinum) and firmly established Idan as a new type of
Israeli pop star.

In the fall of 2006, the record label Cumbancha
released the music of the Idan Raichel Project worldwide, bringing even
more renown to this inspirational collective. Billboard Magazine called
their international release “One of the most fascinating titles to
emerge in world music this year…a multi—ethnic tour de force.” The New
York Times selected the album as one of the top world music releases of
the year, and media from Peru to Portugal was unanimous in their
praise. The album also received a nomination as one of the best world
music albums of the year by the BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music.
