The Penn Reading Initiative: A student-run tutorial program forimproving reading is helping Philadelphiaschools improve reading while learningabout linguistics

Dr. Bill Labov, a sociolinguist at the University of Pennsylvania will discuss his work in inner city Philadelphia schools. He will talk about how his student tutors (Penn undergrads enrolled in his ABCS courses) are using hisprogram and showing results. DrewSchool (a low income Philadelphiaelementary school) saw a 50% improvementin the number of proficientreaders in the 3rd grade from2003‐2006. Labov said, "PRI allows us to treat children as individuals,adjust to their learning styles, andchange 'I hate to read into I lovereading.'"
