Generation Asylum: New Eritrean Refugees and the Politics of Human Rights
Dr. Hepner will discuss her multi-sited ethnographic research with refugees and asylum seekers in Ethiopia, Europe and the US and among global activist networks. Her project reveals how members of Eritrea's newest migrants, or "generation asylum" are reworking revolutionary nationalist values and developing creative political strategies that invoke human rights norms and cut across chronological generations, migration vintages, and cultural and political settings to combat both the Eritrean regime's transnational power and the erosion of refugee/asylum protection in host societies.
