Anatomy of an Uprising: Women, Democracy, and the Moroccan Feminist Spring
Professor Karla McKanders will focus on the gap between the reform of gender equality laws and the constitutional reforms that were passed during the February 2011 Moroccan feminist spring. To date, most conversations surrounding the Arab Springs publications have focused on the revolutions without taking into account the feminist perspective. This presentation takes a novel approach by examining how the feminist perspective impacted the Arab Spring movement in Morocco and this perspective's impact on how women conceptualize their status within the movement and the future of democratic society and gender rights.
