Penn Reading Initiative: A student-run tutorial program
The Penn Reading Initiative: A student-run tutorial program for improving reading is helping Philadelphia schools improve reading while learning about linguistics
Dr. Bill Labov, a sociolinguist at the University of Pennsylvania will discuss his work in inner city Philadelphia schools. He will talk about how his student tutors (Penn undergrads enrolled in his ABCS courses) are using his program and showing results. Drew School (a low income Philadelphia elementary school) saw a 50% improvement in the number of proficient readers in the 3rd grade from 2003‐2006. Labov said, "PRI allows us to treat children as individuals, adjust to their learning styles, and change 'I hate to read into I love reading.'"
