Professor Elman's numerous and path-breaking publications include: From Philosophy To Philology (Harvard University Press, 1984, 1990, 2001); Classicism, Politics, and Kinship (University of California Press, 1990); and A Cultural History of Civil Examinations in Late Imperial China (University of California, 2000). He served as the Mellon Visiting Professor of Traditional Chinese Studies in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton from 1999 to 2001. He has received fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Fulbright Foundation. Professor Elman received the Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award in the Humanities in 2010.
