Living in the Shadows: Latinas and their Citizen Children

Dr. Cameron D. Lippard from Appalachian State University will present at the Center for the Study of Social Justice colloquium.

His presentation uses data from a study conducted from 2009 to 2011 examining the lives of Latino families living in rural, western North Carolina. Particularly, this presentation uncovers what undocumented Latino immigrant mothers reported facing when navigating the various local health agencies and public schools in trying to get their native-born children services. Persistent themes arise through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions that point out that undocumented Latino mothers face significant levels of individual and structural discrimination. Moreover, these women feel socially isolated and have withdrawn from interacting with "locals" because of their increased fear of being deported and leaving their citizen children behind.
