Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m.
Veteran journalist and media critic Alison Weir will discuss what American news media are not telling us about Israel-Palestine. The press is arguably the most powerful institution in the U.S.; it provides the information on which Americans form their conclusions on issues and decide which candidates to vote for. This lecture will detail the pervasive slant and filtering that prevent the public from receiving the full facts on Israel-Palestine and will discuss the systemic causes of this dangerous situation.
This event is hosted by the Students for Justice in Palestine at UTK and will also feature Palestinian students from UT speaking about their experiences in Palestine. Drinks and Arabic cookies and sweets will be provided.
About Alison Weir
Former journalist Alison Weir is the Executive Director of "If Americans Knew" (which specializes in statistical and factual examination of Israel-Palestine and media coverage of the region) and President of the "Council for the National Interest" (founded 19 years ago by Congressmen and ambassadors to work for foreign policies not dominated by special interests). She speaks widely, including briefings on Capitol Hill, at the National Press Club, presentations at the Asia Media Summit in Kuala Lumpur and Beijing, and lectures at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Berkeley, the Naval Postgraduate Institute, and numerous other venues. She has received diverse awards, is generally considered the foremost analyst on media coverage of Israel-Palestine, and her articles have appeared in the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, CounterPunch, and various anthologies, including The New Intifada, Censored 2005, and the Encyclopedia of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. She narrated the award-winning documentary Occupation 101.
