Title: "Water Funds: Investing in Watershed Conservation to Benefit Both People & Nature"

Abstract: Water funds are a collaboration between water users and ecosystem services providers. Water users invest in a long term fund which finances watershed conservation through a collaborative decision making process. Motivated by successes with water funds in Latin America, The Nature Conservancy are developing a water fund in the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. This ecosystem suffers from algal blooms in its main stem caused, at least in part, by nutrient loading. We are using an ecosystem services modeling tool called InVEST to map nutrient retention on the landscape to identify priority areas for water fund investment. We are working with the agricultural community, academics, NGOs, and the water utilities to develop a fund that will invest in a wide range of practices including improving management of row crop agriculture, finding ways to deal with nutrient waste from swine and poultry farms, and conserving native long leaf pine habitat.
