'Terrorism and its Effects on Politics and Society'

When a massive disaster strikes during wars or war-like situations, many people suffer post-traumatic stress. Not only does the trauma ignite new, shared behaviors in society, but traumatized individuals and families engage their descendants in the task of resolving old wounds: psychic, emotional, and spiritual.

Join us in better understanding ourselves and others, as Dr. Volkan explores the effects of trauma around the world with special attention to Waco and 9/11 on American society and politics.

Vamik D. Volkan, M.D. has been nominated for the Nobel Peace prize 4 times and for more than three decades has applied the theories of psychoanalysis around the world to help opposing enemy groups with the goal of peaceful solutions to their conflict.

Dr. Volkan holds numerous teaching positions including Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. He has authored over 40 books; his latest is Enemies on the Couch: Psychopolitical Journey Through War and Peace (2013).
