McClung Public Speaking Contest

SEMI-ANNUAL MCCLUNG PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST TO BE HELD THIS WEEK

Students compete in the largest speech competition in the Southeast

KNOXVILLE-The semi-annual McClung Public Speaking Contest will be held Thursday, November 14, at 8:00 p.m. in Cox Auditorium, located in the Alumni Memorial Building. The event, hosted by the School of Communication Studies, is the largest public speaking competition in the southeast.

Over 900 students are currently enrolled in Communication Studies 210 (public speaking). These students were asked to prepare informative speeches with an international focus in keeping with the University's Ready for the World campaign. Finalists in the competition were determined based on a rigorous selection process that included an outline review and a semi-‐final round. The five finalists will compete for cash prizes ranging from $25-$150, provided by the Charles J. McClung Endowment.

Along with providing an excellent opportunity for the finalists to practice their public speaking skills in front of a large audience, the competition also offers an entertaining night for the crowd. Attendees will learn about campus involvement opportunities during commercials between each speaker. Some of these organizations include WUTK and UT Athletics. Students who attend will also be entered to win several gift‐card giveaways provided by local businesses such as Starbucks, Sunspot, and more!

We are excited to reveal the five finalists (in alphabetical order) and their topics:

  • Chelsea Bales – "Communication in South Africa"
  • Brandie McConkey – "A Day in the Life of a Japanese High School Student"
  • Ambika Pande – "Discrimination against Women in India"
  • Sarah Primm – "The A21 Campaign and Greece"
  • Katherine Whitaker – "Customer Service in Japan"
