The Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, along with The Center for the Study of Youth and Political Conflict, the Middle Eastern Students Association, and Students for Justice in Palestine will be hosting celebrated Palestinian film director Annemarie Jacir and screening her latest feature film, When I Saw You.
Jacir has been named one of Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Cinema. Her films have debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and other notable festivals. Her previous feature film, Salt of this Sea, was an Academy Award qualifier, was nominated for an Oscar as the Best Foreign Language Film, and was noted as the first feature film directed by a Palestinian woman. Her latest film, When I Saw You, has followed in acclaim. When I Saw You won Best Asian Film at the Berlin International Film Festival, Best Arab Film in Abu Dhabi, Audience Award and SIGNIS award in Amiens, and was Palestine's 2013 Oscar Entry.
The screening will be in the UC Shiloh room 235, Tuesday January 21, at 6:30 pm.
The film is in Arabic with English Language subtitles.
The film is about a young Palestinian refugee and his coming of age in Jordan in the 1960's.
