TITLE: Numerical Algebraic Geometry

ABSTRACT: Nonlinear systems of equations arise in a variety of science and engineering applications with the solutions providing valuable information about the problem begin investigated. Computational approaches for solving such systems based on Groebner bases arise from an algebraic description of the set of solutions. Numerical algebraic geometry uses a geometric approach where the resulting algorithms depend upon a variety of areas including algebraic geometry, complex analysis, differential equations, and numerical analysis.  This talk will provide a gentle introduction to numerical algebraic geometry and explore a variety of results in mathematics, science, and engineering arising from numerical algebraic geometric computations.

Refreshments will be available at 3:10 p.m.
