It's French Modern week at Cinema Club! After watching three black and white films from America, France, and Mexico, we are taking a quantum leap into the future with Leos Carax's Holy Motors, a French experimental film that I can't even begin to describe.
Here's an attempt: Holy Motors is about one man named Mr. Oscar, who is driven around a vaguely futuristic Paris by that creepy girl from Eyes Without a Face (seriously!) in a white stretch limousine. Inside Oscar's limousine there are hundreds of costumes--clothes, makeup, masks--and every time he leaves the car, he becomes a different person (figuratively?). Many things remain unexplained in this movie, which likely will make for a lively post-screening discussion. You will be confused and (hopefully) dazzled.
The film is a awe-inspiring and free-wheeling romp through multiple genres and periods of film history, embracing absurdity and metatheatre wholeheartedly. It was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, and for good reason. Here is a blurb from Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian:
"Leos Carax's Holy Motors is weird and wonderful, rich and strange – barking mad, in fact. It is wayward, kaleidoscopic, black comic and bizarre; there is in it a batsqueak of genius, dishevelment and derangement; it is captivating and compelling. ... [T]his is what we have all come to Cannes for: for something different, experimental, a tilting at windmills, a great big pole-vault over the barrier of normality by someone who feels that the possibilities of cinema have not been exhausted by conventional realist drama."
The film will be jointly hosted by Shelby Cundiff and Lydia Creech, and free coffee will be served before and after the screening. We are giddy just thinking about it.
