Mathematics Colloquium

SPEAKER: Prof. Toan Nguyen, Pennsylvania State

TITLE: On the stability of boundary layers in fluid dynamics

ABSTRACT: Study of hydrodynamics stability and the inviscid limit of viscous fluids is one of the most classical and well-studied subjects in fluid dynamics, going back to the most prominent physicists including Lord Rayleigh, Orr, Sommerfeld, Heisenberg, among many others. Mathematically, there are many remaining challenging problems. I will review recent developments regarding stability of shear flows and boundary layers. This includes a few joint works with Gerard-Varet, Grenier, and Guo.

The talk is intended to be accessible to graduate students.

Refreshments will be available at 3:10 p.m.
