WUOT Wins Its First-Ever National Edward R. Murrow Award

Public radio station WUOT 91.9 FM, licensed to UT Knoxville has won its first-ever National Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association. The annual awards honor outstanding achievement in electronic journalism. WUOT was the national small market winner in the "Best Writing" category for a compilation of three different feature stories that aired in 2008: "In the Space of a Moment," "Cicadian Rhythms" and "My Life. My Vote. (Sarah Moore Greene)." All three stories were written and produced by WUOT News Director Matt Shafer Powell.

Rock On! Beloved UT Landmark to Move to Nearby Location

small photoThe Rock, a beloved landmark and venue for student self-expression on the UT Knoxville campus, will soon have a new home. This summer, the Rock will be moved about 275 feet diagonally across the street, from its current location south of Volunteer Boulevard, near the intersection of Pat Head Summitt Street, to its new location, north of Volunteer Boulevard, near the intersection of Pat Head Summitt Street, near the Music Building. The move is necessary because construction of the new Student Health Center, set to begin this fall and take 18 months, will leave little space for the Rock, which students and others often paint multiple times per day.

Sevier County Teacher Wins Marian Oates Teacher Enrichment Award

Bill Taylor, a middle school teacher employed by Sevier County Schools, is the 2009 recipient of the Marian E. Oates Teacher Enrichment Award from UT Knoxville. The award provides a fellowship for professional development to the teacher selected. A gift from UT Knoxville alumna Marian Oates to the College of Arts and Sciences established the award, which is in its second year.

Three Inducted to UT's Educators Hall of Honor

small photoThree more individuals have been inducted to College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences' Educators Hall of Honor at UT Knoxville. The new inductees are Patricia DuBose Clark, professor of education at Lincoln Memorial University; Betsey B. Creekmore, associate vice chancellor for space and facilities management at UT Knoxville; and the late Frances Richardson Leibrock, who was a teacher at Newport Grammar School.

Kuumba Festival Celebrates 20 Years This Weekend

The 20th annual Kuumba Festival kicks off its annual celebration of African American cultural art Thursday, June 25, at the Knoxville Museum of Art. The four-day event, sponsored by African American Appalachian Arts Inc. (AAAA) with support from the Minority Student Affairs and Black Cultural Programming Committee at UT Knoxville is the largest African American festival in East Tennessee.

UT's Kraken Supercomputer Named World's Sixth Fastest

Add one more top 10 finish to the list of accomplishments at UT Knoxville: home to the world's most powerful academic supercomputer. Called Kraken, the computer has been named the world's sixth fastest in the most recent edition of the Top500 list of the most powerful computers, announced today at the International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany.

UT's National Defense Business Institute Assess Navy's Modernization Plans

The National Defense Business Institute (NDBI) at UT Knoxville has completed an independent assessment of the U.S. Navy's plans to modernize the nation's fleet of destroyer combat ships. The study provides a factual foundation for understanding the factors involved in the Navy's recent decisions regarding its destroyer modernization plans.

Supply Chain Program Ranked Highly by Leading Research Firm

UT Knoxville has one of the nation's strongest supply chain programs in the U.S., according to AMR Research, the leading research firm focused on the global supply chain and its supporting technologies. AMR Research surveyed 126 companies and 19 academic institutions to determine which U.S. programs best prepare students to manage increasingly global integrated supply chain organizations.

Seven High School Campers with Influenza-like Illness Sent Home from UT

Seven high school students attending the Tennessee Governor's Schools for the Sciences and Engineering at UT Knoxville have an influenza-like illness and are being sent home. Other campers residing in the same residence hall have been advised to take precautions and watch for symptoms. Flu tests have been done and sent to the state for analysis.

UT Study: UT Knoxville Campus Has More Than $900M Impact on State Economy

A new study shows that the combined economic impact of UT Knoxville on the state of Tennessee is more than $915 million. Because of the broad range of purchasing and relationships that the campus and its employees have statewide, UT economists say this impact translates to 1.8 additional jobs for every person working on campus, and $3.10 in income for every dollar directly earned by university employees.
