Scholarship Who Qualifies What it Provides Success Story

Tennessee HOPE

Started in 2004. Available to Tennessee students attending in-state schools.

Graduating high school seniors with 3.0 grade point averages or ACT scores of 21 or better. Up to $3,800 per academic year. Virtually all UT freshman qualify. UT officials say the HOPE Scholarship has helped raise the academic bar at UT. Of the 4,200 freshmen who started classes this year, one-third had a core GPA of 4.0—the highest percentage of straight-A students ever in a freshman class.

Tennessee Pledge

UT started funding these scholarships in the fall of 2005.

Students at/or below the 150% federally defined poverty level for a family of four.

Guarantees recipients can attend UT for four years without debt.

Last fall, 189 in-state freshmen received the scholarship package. This fall approximately 250 freshmen qualified for the Pledge.

Tennessee Promise

UT will fund these scholarships starting in the fall of 2007.

Students from 35 high schools across the state, many in the Memphis & Nashville areas.

Up to $5,800 per year for 4 years to cover the cost of tuition when combined with HOPE & other scholarships. The Promise expands UT's definition of diversity by targeting students who might not otherwise choose UT. Promise schools are selected because their grads don't typically enroll at UT and because their grads face financial and other barriers to college.
