A large portion of Phillip Fulmer Way will be closing Monday, Dec. 1 to accommodate the next phase of renovations to Neyland Stadium. The construction involves the west side of the stadium and will be completed in August 2009.

New UT Supercomputer World's 15th Most Powerful

The University of Tennessee's new supercomputer has entered the ranks of the computing elite by placing 15th on the newly-released Top500 list of the world's most powerful computers. Named Kraken, after a mythical Norse sea monster, the newly unveiled machine is also the world's second most powerful academic supercomputer.

Ready for the World Cafe to Celebrate Last Week

The Ready for the World Cafe celebrates its last week of the fall semester Nov. 17-20 with a menu that includes African, Greek and Italian dishes. The menu will include Africa-inspired beef tips, vegetable moussaka, honey-pretzel chicken, vegetarian fusilli, Italian sub soup, Greek potato salad and tomato-crowned cod.

12th Annual Goodrich Lecture Focuses on University-Community Engagement

Henry Louis Taylor Jr. will be at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, on Nov. 20 to present the 12th annual Billie Grace Goodrich Distinguished Lecture. Taylor -- who has a master's degree in audiology and speech pathology from UT Knoxville -- will talk about the importance of the university-community engagement. The event, free and open to the public, will be at 5 p.m. in the University Center Auditorium.

Last Man to Walk on Moon to Speak at Baker Center Luncheon

Harrison H. "Jack" Schmitt, the last man to walk on the moon, will speak next week at a luncheon sponsored by the University of Tennessee's Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy. The event will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wed., Nov. 19, in the Toyota Auditorium of the Baker Center, located at 1640 Cumberland Ave.

UT Report: Entrepreneurship $23 Billion Strong in Tennessee

The Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation and Columbia Main Street Program will host a discussion of "Entrepreneurship in Tennessee: Striving for Success," a study by Michael Wilcox and Dayton Lambert, both assistant professors of agricultural economics with the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation, Clyde York Conference Room, 147 Bear Creek Pike, in Columbia, Tenn.

Walking or bicycling around town could have an added benefit beyond saving money at the gas pump. A new study conducted by faculty in the UT Obesity Research Center shows countries where walking and bicycling are common tend to have lower rates of obesity.

Prominent East Tennessee businessman Will Pugh recently was honored with the naming of the Will J. Pugh Classroom in the College of Business Administration's new James A. Haslam II Business Building. Pugh founded Pugh & Co. P.C., one of the area's largest and most successful accounting firms, in 1969.

Students Bring Recipes from Home for Multicultural Cookbook

The hotel, restaurant and tourism management program at UT Knoxville has published a cookbook with a variety of dishes cooked for many years by families from Tennessee and countries such as Germany, Haiti, India and China. The Multicultural Cookbook has a range of recipes from potato candy and bean bread to meatloaf and pav bhaji. The cookbook is on sale at the UT Bookstore.

UT Knoxville has named three faculty members as the latest group of James R. Cox University Professors. The group includes Angela Batey, associate professor of music; Louis J. Gross, professor of mathematics and ecology and evolutionary biology; and Donald Hodges, professor of forestry, wildlife and fisheries.
