Happy 60th, WUOT!

Staff off UT's public radio station WUOT 91.9 FM celebrated the station's 60th anniversary by painting the Rock. WUOT was the first noncommercial, educational station in the state and one of the first FM station in the Southeast. It became the first public radio station in the state in 1970, when it was one of 73 stations to be qualified by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The station is a charter member of National Public Radio and was one of the first stations in the country to broadcast NPR's first program, "All Things Considered," in 1971.

About the Rock

Unearthed in the 1960s, the Rock soon thereafter became a “canvas” for student messages. For years the university sandblasted away the messages but eventually deferred to students’ artistic endeavors. The Daily Beacon has editorialized: “Originally a smaller rock, The Rock has grown in prestige and size while thousands of coats of paint have been thrown on its jagged face. Really, its function is as an open forum for students.”

We invite you to submit photos of your artistic endeavors.

Moving the Rock

In the summer of 2009, the Rock was moved to its new location. We were there with our cameras to capture the moment.
