KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee-Knoxville College of Engineering will commemorate the 25th anniversary of its environmental engineering program Nov. 17.

A program and reception is set for 1:30-4:15 p.m. in the UT Science and Engineering Building.

Dr. Jerry Stoneking, UT-Knoxville engineering dean, said graduate environmental engineering studies at UT-Knoxville began with three full-time faculty members and nine students.

The program now has 19 full-time, part-time and adjunct faculty and 160 students, he said. It is among the nation’s leaders with 250 master’s and 25 doctoral graduates.

The college’s civil engineering department was changed in 1994 to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, he said.

“The environmental engineering faculty are proud of its graduates and research accomplishments over the first 25 years and look forward to responding to the challenges and issues which the state, region and nation will face over the next 25 years,” Stoneking said.

Dr. Bruce Tschantz, celebration committee chair and UT-Knoxville civil and environmental engineering professor, said 225 people have registered to attend.

The program includes tours of the Science and Engineering Building, a history of the program, and a reception. Gordon Fee, president of Lockheed-Martin Energy Systems, will speak on the links between education, industry and the environment.
