KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dr. Jerry Stoneking, University of Tennessee-Knoxville engineering dean, has been named Outstanding Engineer of the Year by the Knoxville chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers.

Dr. Greg Reed, TSPE president, said the award recognizes Stoneking’s efforts in guiding the college through a two-year continuous improvement and strategic planning program.

Reed, who also heads the civil and environmental engineering department at UT-Knoxville, said the college is gaining national attention for its education and research agenda developed under Stoneking’s leadership.

“This award recognizes Dr. Stoneking for his significant accomplishments in moving the College of Engineering at UT-Knoxville toward more professional interaction and responsiveness, and in organizing all the engineering programs in Tennessee to become more active participants in professional issues,” Reed said.

Stoneking has increased faculty involvement with professional and technical societies, developed college-industrial partnerships, and helped the college respond to changing needs of the profession, Reed said.

Stoneking was head of the engineering science and mechanics department and acting dean before being named dean in 1993.

Stoneking’s award was presented at an annual energy and technology conference sponsored by the American Welding Society and the American Society of Nondestructive Testing.
