KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Notable women at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville will be permanently honored with a plaque unveiled Thursday at the Carolyn P. Brown University Center.

The award is named for Angie Warren Perkins, UT-Knoxville’s first dean of women (1889-1900), a position she held without pay, UTK Chancellor Bill Snyder said.

Perkins is also the first honoree.

Norma Cook, associate professor and chair of the UTK Commission for Women, and Dr. Milton Klein, university historian, assisted in the unveiling.

Perkins was honored because “she was instrumental in convincing the university to open its doors to women,” Cook said.

Honorees from UT faculty, staff, or alumnae will be chosen annually by the UT-Knoxville’s Commission for Women and recognized at the university’s annual Charter Day in September. The name of each honoree will be added to the new plaque in conjunction with Charter Day. Perkins was honored last September.

“This plaque is a way to honor women’s contributions to the university’s history and, in the process, learn more about women and their accomplishments at UTK,” Cook said.

The UTK Commission for Women, appointed by the chancellor, advises the university on planning, implementation, and evaluation of university programs, policies, and services designed to improve the status of women.
