KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Seven professors and students from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville will attend “Stand for Children,” what is billed as a day of national commitment, June 1 in Washington, D.C.

More than 1,800 national, state and local organizations have joined with the Children’s Defense Fund to support the non-partisan event.

“Stand for Children is an important day of recognition, commitment and advocacy for the needs of young children and their families,” said Dr. Jan Allen, one of the seven from UT-Knoxville attending.

“Particularly in this election year, policy makers must consider the impact of their legislation — even tax policy, labor policy, or military policy — on families with children,” said Allen, a professor of child and family studies.

“Tennessee has the opportunity to show national leadership in addressing the needs of families with young children. We want our state to be represented in Washington on this historic day.”

Also attending with Allen will be Dr. Melissa Groves, assistant professor of child and family studies, and graduate students Michelle Slinsky, Deena Grogan, Rick Martin, Sharon Harper and Jennifer Manges.
