KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 10,583-seat upper deck addition to the University of Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium means more people, more cars and perhaps more traffic problems on football Saturdays, UT officials said Tuesday.

The new seats boost the stadium’s official capacity to 102,485.

The expanded G10 parking garage next to Thompson-Boling Arena will provide a net increase of 800 parking spaces on campus, UT Executive Vice President Emerson Fly said.

To help motorists avoid traffic jams on game days, UT Police Chief Ed Yovella recommends:

* Arriving early and planning to wait until traffic has cleared before leaving.

* Leaving campus after the game by heading east rather than west on Neyland Drive.

* Parking at the UT agriculture campus parking lot or Knoxville Civic Coliseum parking garage and riding a shuttle to and from the stadium. The costs are: $6 for agriculture campus parking, $4 for Civic Coliseum parking, and $2 for shuttle buses.

The first home game is at 7 p.m., Aug. 31, against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Stadium gates will open at 4 p.m., an hour earlier than usual, for a ceremony dedicating the stadium expansion.
