Pulitzer Prize-Winning Writer To Speak At UT (170)
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Jon Franklin, winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for science feature writing, will speak at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville March 17.
Franklin’s lecture is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the University Center Shiloh Room. The event is free.
The lecture is part of the UT School of Journalism’s Alfred and Julia Hill lecture series, which brings distinguished science communicators to Knoxville to speak on important issues in science, society and the mass media, said Dr. Mark Littman, UT-Knoxville professor of journalism.
The endowed lectureship was made possible by a gift from Tom Hill, former publisher of The Oak Ridger, and his sister Mary Frances Hill Holton, in honor of their parents, who established Oak Ridge’s first successful private newspaper.
Franklin, who won the Pulitzer’s at the Baltimore Evening Sun, is now professor of creative writing at the University of Oregon. He won the first Pulitzer Prizes awarded in feature writing (“Mrs. Kelly’s Monster,” 1979) and explanatory journalism (“The Mind Fixers,” 1987).
He has written four books about medical science. Another book, “Writing for Story,” (1986), teaches the technique and philosophy of nonfiction writing, Littman said.
