KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — High school students and their teachers will have the opportunity to learn from professional writers during the 1997 Young Writer’s Institute at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
Workshops, readings and dialog about creative writing are scheduled April 12. Students and teachers will explore poetry, fiction writing, song writing, personal writing (nonfiction) and writing for young adults, said Dr. Marilyn Kallet, poet and director of UT’s Creative Writing Program.
Authors who will lead sessions include Kallet; Allen Wier, UT-Knoxville professor and prize-winning fiction writer; Edward Francisco, poet and novelist; Connie Green, author of young adult novels; Daniel Roop and Dagan Coppock, performance poets; and Linda Schaible, singer-songwriter.
The UT-Knoxville English Department and the Knoxville Writers’ Guild are co-sponsors of the event.
Teachers may bring up to eight students. Participants will be registered on a first-come, first-serve basis, said Kallet.
Registration deadline is April 1.
