KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Three graduate broadcasting students at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville are scheduled next month to present the results of award-winning research projects at a national conference in Nevada.

 The projects, part of a class taught last fall by broadcasting professor Dr. Ben Bates, earned Reggie Murphy, Todd Chambers and Steven McClung first- and second-place honors in a competition sponsored by the Broadcast Education Association.

 All three students are working toward their doctoral degrees.

 Murphy teamed with undergraduate Melanie Rayho to examine the use of home pages on the World Wide Web by commercial radio stations. The research earned first place in BEA’s management and sales division.

 Chambers examined “the local market and news radio” to earn first place in the research division.

 For another project, Murphy joined McClung to research use of the Internet in communications classes. They earned second place in the courses, curricula, and administration division.

 The BEA conference is April 4, followed the next day by a conference of the National Association of Broadcasters. During the NAB conference Bates and Dr. Jeff Wilkinson, also a UT-Knoxville broadcasting professor, will present a study they did about the effectiveness of remote broadcasts by radio stations.

 Chambers and McClung worked with the faculty members on the NAB-funded study.
