Scripps Howard Foundation Funds UT Internship (220)
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Scripps-Howard Foundation has made a $10,000 gift to the College of Communications at University of Tennessee-Knoxville for a pilot summer internship program.
Communications Dean Dwight L. Teeter Jr. said the gift, which is part of the university’s 21st Century Campaign, will be used to fund four internships worth $2,500 each.
”These internships will be a real career builder,” Teeter said. “Scripps is a heavy hitter in the communications industry and the internship will be a very important addition to any student’s resume.”
Judith G. Clabes, president of the Scripps-Howard Foundation, said the foundation was very interested in seeing how such an internship program will work and whether educators think the internships are a worthwhile endeavor for the foundation.
Teeter said the internships will complement the college’s instructional programs and give the students an opportunity to learn in a workplace environment.
The students can use the internships to work in a newsroom, electronic news, broadcast, advertising or marketing environment, Teeter said.
”I am looking forward to a continuing relationship with the foundation if we do well with this pilot program,” Teeter said.
The Knoxville News-Sentinel, The Memphis Commercial Appeal, the Home & Garden Network, and a cable company are part of Scripps Howard operations in Tennessee.
