KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A University of Tennessee-Knoxville geography professor has helped write a National Academy of Sciences report on how geographic studies can help solve world problems.

 Dr. Sally Horn is one of several U.S. geographers who contributed to the recently released NAS report titled “Rediscovering Geography: New Relevance for the New Century.”

 Horn said that the report explores the increased significance of geography in education, research and public policy.

 ”Geographers are playing an increasingly important role in analysis of major world problems, such as poverty, climate change, food production and the spread of an epidemic such as AIDS,” Horn said. “This report recognizes the importance of geographic literacy in a rapidly changing world.”

 Horn said the report also outlines steps that geographers should take to strengthen the discipline to meet increasing demands for critical information.

 The steps include new programs to improve understanding among American adults and more multidisciplinary research to address global change, conflict resolution and urbanization, she said.
