KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Vol football fans attending the UT-Ole Miss game can ponder the possibility of life on Mars with a University of Tennessee geologist who works on several NASA projects involving the Red Planet.

Dr. Harry McSween will speak at the “Pre-Game Showcase” at 1:30 p.m., Oct. 4, in the University Center Shiloh Room. His topic will be “Evidence for Life in a Martian Meteorite!?”

 McSween examined the Martian meteorite found in Antarctica which some scientists believe may indicate the evidence of water and life on Mars.

 He was a member of the NASA’s Pathfinder team analyzing the composition of rocks on Mars. McSween is credited with naming “Barnacle Bill,” the first rock examined by the Mars rover.

 McSween is also working on NASA’s Global Surveyor mission which is mapping the surface of Mars.

The UT-Knoxville College of Arts and Sciences and the Athletics Department sponsor the pre-game lecture series, held two hours before kickoff of each UT home game.

 The lectures are free and drinks and snacks are provided.
