Free Clinic Offered For Depression Screening (170)
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Area residents are invited to participate in a depression screening clinic offered free by mental health professionals at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
Dr. Ann O’Connor-Slimp of the UT-Knoxville Student Counseling Services Center said the clinic will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 9, in room 221 of University Center.
”Come in anytime during hours of the clinic,” O’Connor-Slimp said. “We will have mental health professionals available throughout the day.”
Participants will watch a video about the signs and symptoms of depression, complete a short screening test, and have the opportunity to discuss the test results with a professional, O’Connor-Slimp said.
”To watch the video, take the test and talk about the results should take about 30 minutes, depending on the individual,” O’Connor-Slimp said.
The clinic is part of National Depression Screening Day, held during Mental Illness Awareness Week.
Of the 17 million Americans who experience depression each year, the National Institute of Mental Health estimates fewer than half seek treatment even though 80 percent could be helped.
Symptoms of depression include feelings of helplessness, restlessness and irritability, possibly accompanied by changes in sleep or appetite, loss of energy and thoughts of suicide or death.
