UT-Martin Offers “Survival Spanish” for Officers (135)

MARTIN, Tenn. — Recognizing the potential for misunderstanding between people who speak different languages, UT Martin is offering area law enforcement officers a course in “Survival Spanish.”

 ”Survival Spanish for Law Enforcement” will be taught on campus in a 40-hour course Dec. 15-19 by Dr. Ivan Augsburger, an international programs faculty member at UT Martin.

 Participants in the course, approved by the Tennessee Police Officer Standard Training Commission, may earn continuing education credits through UT Martin.

 Pronunciation, street phrases, arrest expressions, commands, interrogation terms and basic language will be taught. Cultural differences also will be discussed for better communication.

Pre-registration is required by Dec. 1. The course is open to officers from Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas and Missouri. The fee, including five nights’ lodging, is $325.
