KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A University of Tennessee faculty member is one of 26 scholars studying in Italy this semester as a Rome Prize winner.

 Mark Schimmenti, associate professor of architecture at UT-Knoxville, is studying 20th century Italian urbanism. Schimmenti’s academic specialty is architectural and urban design.

 Marleen Davis, dean of UT-Knoxville’s College of Architecture and Planning, said the American Academy in Rome is the world’s foremost overseas center for independent study and research in fine arts and humanities.

 Through a juried competition the academy selects Rome Prize Fellows, she said. There were more than 1,000 applicants in the recent competition.

 Schimmenti, who joined the UT faculty in 1995, has worked in Knoxville’s “Next Big Steps” planning process and in UT design programs in Chattanooga and Nashville.
