KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee ranked high in U.S. News & World Report’s recent surveys of graduate programs in law, business, education, and health disciplines.

 UT-Knoxville and UT-Memphis had programs ranked in the magazine’s first-time survey of health disciplines, which include speech pathology and nursing anesthesia.

 The UT-Memphis anesthesia program ranked 5th, and speech pathology at UT-Knoxville was tied with several schools for 21st.

 Other ranked programs, all at UT-Knoxville, included business, 43rd of 300 schools surveyed; education, 48 of 191 surveyed; and law, 48 of 174 schools surveyed.

 The magazine last year ranked law 43rd and business 49th. Education was not ranked a year ago.

 Ranking measures varied by survey, but usually included reputation, student selectivity, placement success and faculty resources, the magazine, which will be on newsstands Feb. 23, says.

Chancellor Bill Snyder said publicity of strong programs will help other graduate offerings at UT-Knoxville.

 ”It is our goal to strengthen additional programs and get them to the level of these nationally ranked programs,” Snyder said.

 Snyder also said $500,000 in new money for graduate support in selected programs already has been allocated in next year’s budget.

 ”With these additional funds we will attract more students into our graduate school,” Snyder said. “Increased graduate enrollment is a priority.”
