KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Twenty-five high school seniors are at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville for the Whittle Scholars weekend.

From the group, 10 will be offered the university’s top academic and leadership scholarship, Dr. Thomas Broadhead, director of honors programs, said.

The Whittle Scholarship provides $7,000 annually for up to four years, and it provides for a semester abroad. The program is named for and funded by Chris Whittle, UT-Knoxville graduate and the founder of Whittle Communications and the Edison Project.

”You are among the best high school seniors,” Dr. John Peters, vice chancellor for academic affairs, told the students Thursday evening. “To have been invited here as a finalist indicates that you are very special.”

UT received more than 1,200 Whittle applications this year.

While on campus, the finalists will meet with the scholarship selection committee, have group discussions of a book they were all asked to read, and do a three-minute presentation on themselves and their interests, Broadhead said.

Approximately 130 students have been awarded Whittle Scholarships since 1990.
