Science Author of the Year To Speak at UT (200)

Robert Kanigel, award-winning science writer and professor, will speak April 7 at the University of Tennessee-s annual Alfred and Julia Hill Lecture on Science, Society, and the Mass Media.

”The Perils of Popularizing Science” is the topic of Kanigel’s talk, set for 8 p.m. in the University Center Shiloh Room. The lecture and a reception are free and open to the public.

Kanigel, professor of science writing at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was the American Society of Journalists and Authors- 1998 Author of the Year and a two-time winner of the society-s Outstanding Article award. He received the American Chemical Society Grady-Stack Award for interpreting chemistry for the public in 1989.

His books include ”The One Best Way” about Winslow Taylor, the founder of industrial engineering, and a 1998 guide to the world-s best books titled ”Vintage Reading.”

The Alfred and Julia Hill lecture series is named for the founders of The Oak Ridger newspaper and presented by UT-Knoxville-s School of Journalism.

The series is endowed by a gift from former Oak Ridger publisher Tom Hill and his sister Mary Frances Hill Holton in honor of their parents. It brings distinguished science communicators here to speak on issues in science, society, and mass media.
