KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A new contest offers 10 of the state’s top high school math students the chance to win four-year tuition scholarships to the University of Tennessee.

The Tennessee Math Contest, sponsored by the UT-Knoxville Mathematics Department, is part of a day of math-centered activities planned at the University Center for Oct. 14.

“We’re seeking to identify talented math students across the state and to encourage interest in mathematical study among high school students,” said Dr. John Conway, head of the department. “This is a great opportunity for the department to emphasize the importance of math education and to encourage good students to look at UT.”

Conway said that the contest, modeled on a University of Nebraska program, will test all participants. Those scoring in the top 50 will take a second exam. While both tests are graded, teams of students will compete in a math bowl tournament, Conway said.

Winners of the contest need not major in math to use the scholarships, Conway said. High school sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to compete.

The department is expecting as many as 500 students to take part, Conway said. Other UT departments and colleges are expected to prepare exhibits for the day-long event.

“We’re very much committed to outreach and working with public school teachers and students,” Conway said.
