KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee is applying some of its environmental expertise to its own operations.

A committee on the environment is looking for ways to improve UT-Knoxville’s energy efficiency, procurement policies, recycling and other practices that affect the environment.

“As the flagship public university in Tennessee, it is important for us to be good environmental stewards,” Dr. Bill Snyder, UT-Knoxville chancellor, said. “This committee can significantly advance that goal and enhance the visibility of UT-Knoxville’s commitment to environmental preservation.”

Dr. Jack Barkenbus, executive director of the UT Energy, Environment and Resources Center, will chair the panel of students, faculty and staff.

“When we look at the materials purchased and used on campus this year, we see a significant opportunity to have a positive environmental impact,” Barkenbus said.

The committee also will look at issues of reuse, transportation and landscape ecology.

Members are: Sara Drake and Charles Price, students; Jon Coddington, architecture and design; Dr. Mary English, EERC; Dr. Carol Harden, geography; Dr. Richard Jendrucko, engineering; Dr. Mike McKinney, geology; Dr. Marian Moffett, academic affairs; Dr. John Nolt, philosophy; John Parker, physical plant; Sam Rogers, ornamental horticulture and landscape design; and Catherine Wilt, EERC and former president of the National Recycling Coalition.
