1,600 Receive UT Degrees

KNOXVILLE — Holiday celebrations will begin Saturday morning for some 1,600 University of Tennessee students when they become the school’s newest alumni.

Degrees will be awarded to approximately 1,070 undergraduates and 500 graduate students at fall commencement. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. in Thompson-Boling arena.

Mark Dean, UT engineering graduate and member of the Inventor’s Hall of Fame, will speak. Dean, who works for IBM and is an IBM Fellow, is credited for developing much of the architecture for the personal computer. He holds more than 30 patents or patents pending.

Saturday’s commencement will be the final ceremony as chancellor for Dr. Bill Snyder. He becomes interim senior vice president Jan. 1.

A breakdown of the degrees to be awards shows: agriculture, 83; architecture, 3; arts and sciences, 439; business, 199; communications, 97; education, 53; engineering, 70; human ecology, 111; nursing, 5; social work, 3; law, 8; master’s, 406; doctoral, 92; education specialist, 5.
