MARTIN, Tenn. – The Preservation Hall Jazz Band will bring the original New Orleans jazz to the University of Tennessee at Martin, at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.

This concert is sponsored by the UT Martin Arts Council, the Student Activities Council (SAC) and the Office of Student Life. Tickets are $5 each and go on sale when the doors open at 2 p.m.

The historic Preservation Hall, at 726 St. Peter, in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans, is one of the most popular places to visit in the United States. It is the home of New Orleans jazz and a national cultural treasure.

In addition to its performances in the French Quarter, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been touring the United States for more than 25 years, including recent appearances at Carnegie Hall in New York and Symphony Hall in Boston.

Originating in the early part of the century, New Orleans jazz, performed by The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, is not two-beat “Dixieland.” The tempo is a shade slower than other jazz forms; the melody is always clearly heard; and improvisation is at its heart. Its greatness lies in its simplicity, but its execution can be complex. These venerable muscicians have preserved the traditional New Orleans, pre-Dixieland sound.
