KNOXVILLE — Students from the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design have received two of the seven design awards in a national structural steel design competition.

Fourth year architecture student Trevor Lee of Knoxville placed third, winning $1000. Pawel Kochanek, an exchange student from the Polytechnic University of Krakow, won honorable mention.

The competition is co-sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

Thomas K. Davis, UT associate professor of architecture and faculty sponsor for the project, said about 269 entries were received from 30 architecture programs in North America.

Davis said students were required to create design innovations using steel for a community fitness center in Bethesda,Maryland.

UT students toured a local steel mill and studied computer-aided design as part of their research for the project, he said.

“It was a very challenging project, and a semester-long design effort,” Davis said. “Our impressive showing really speaks to the quality of the architectural design program at UT.”
