Dr. Jill Powell, assistant professor in the University of Tennessee’s College of Nursing in Knoxville, has won the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners State Award for Excellence.

The award is presented to nurse practitioners in each state who demonstrate excellence in delivering health care services.

UT nursing Dean Joan Creasia says the recognition shows that UT nursing faculty are good practitioners as well as good teachers.

“Certainly, this award illustrates that we’ve got excellent practitioners on the faculty here so that they are good teachers as well as good practitioners I think that is important in a school of nursing,” Creasia said.

Creasia says that in addition to being a UT faculty member, Powell is a mental health nurse for the State Department of Corrections and a community volunteer.

“Dr. Powell is one of those people who has been working for clinical agencies or state health agencies, schools of nursing who teaches students about mental health nursing, practices through the Department of Corrections; and does community service through the clinic for the homeless at volunteer ministries. So she does three different facets of her mental health nursing background.”
