KNOXVILLE — A summer program to help young children improve their reading and writing skills is scheduled for June 10-28 at the University of Tennessee Hearing and Speech Clinic.

The Summer Reading and Writing Program classes will be held 9-11:30 a.m. weekdays in the clinic located at 1600 Peyton Manning Pass on UT campus.

Clinic Director Ann Michael said the program would provide one-on-one training and small group instruction for up to eight children in second and third grade who have reading difficulties.

The course activities will focus on reading comprehension strategies, vocabulary and knowledge of story structure and children’s ability to “decode” what they read, Michael said.

“The children will improve their ability to sound out words and learn to predict, summarize, and infer information from reading, using a variety of exciting books,” Michael said.

“We expect some of the children to have very different needs and our program will be flexible enough to develop a individual and small group courses specific to the child’s needs.”

Each child’s oral and written language skills will be assessed at the start of the program, and individual progress reports will be provided after the three-week session is complete.

Participants also will have the opportunity to continue the program in the fall.
