KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee’s Jazz Big Band, under the direction of UT Music Professor Keith Brown, will perform its spring concert at 8 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the Music Building Auditorium.

The featured saxophone soloist for the performance is guest faculty member Zim Ngqawana, a visiting South African musician participating in the Africa semester.

“This concert features the music of one of the most important jazz composers in the history of jazz: Charlie Mingus,” Brown said.

Mingus is a renowned American jazz player, pianist, and composer. He achieved national fame with Red Norvo’s trio in the early 1950s.

Ngqawana performed at the historic inauguration of President Nelson Mandela in 1994.

“The opportunity to play with Ngqawana has been among the most exciting and musical experiences of my career,” Brown said.

The concert is free and open to the public.
