KNOXVILLE — A long-time University of Tennessee alumni official, Lofton K. Stuart Jr., will serve as interim UT President Joe Johnson’s executive assistant.

Stuart, assistant vice president for alumni programs, was appointed Monday. He will serve for the period Johnson is interim president and retain his alumni title.

Stuart will return to his position of leadership in the UT alumni office when a new president takes office.

The appointment is effective immediately.

A UT graduate who joined the alumni staff in 1972, Stuart will represent the president and the President’s Office at selected meetings, assist with communications, and work with staff and volunteer leaders, Johnson said.

“I am grateful to Lofton for accepting this appointment, and I look forward to working with him in this new role,” Johnson said. “He is a loyal, knowledgeable university staff member who works well with everyone — faculty, students, staff, and alumni and friends.”

Stuart’s salary will be $92,700, plus a $2,500 expense account, and he will have use of a UT car.

A Haywood County native, Stuart earned the B.S. degree in agriculture at UT in Knoxville and has done graduate work in communications. In 1970 he was named a Torchbearer, the highest honor awarded to a UT senior.

Stuart is a member of the board of trustees of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the association of college alumni, philanthropy and communications professionals.

He is a member of UT’s Long-Range Planning Committee and has served as a First-Year Studies instructor.

Prior to his appointment as assistant vice president, Stuart was director of alumni affairs of the Knoxville campus. He also was assistant director of annual giving for the UT system.
