UT Libraries’ Culture Corner Spotlights Diversity

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee library system is spotlighting diversity with a Culture Corner on the first floor of the John C. Hodges Library. The corner, sponsored by the Libraries’ Diversity Committee, showcases titles from the Libraries’ collection related to racial, cultural, gender and religious diversity.

A new topic or theme will be chosen each semester, and the committee is currently seeking suggestions for the spring 2004 term. The Fall 2003 corner features titles related to the themes in “The Color of Water,” this year’s selection for the “Life of the Mind” reading program.

All books shelved in the Culture Corner are available for checkout.

“The Diversity Committee endorses a broad definition of diversity,” said Molly Royse, committee co-chair and humanities coordinator for Hodges Library. “We work to provide programs and resources that enhance public knowledge and understanding of the many dimensions of diversity.”

The committee is dedicated to creating a more inclusive community grounded in respect and appreciation for individual differences, she said.

“Last year one of the committee’s goals was to explore ways to showcase the Libraries’ diverse collections. The Culture Corner helped the committee achieve this goal,” Royse said.
