Experts Discuss Patriot Act, Civil Liberties
KNOXVILLE — Two renowned First Amendment experts will discuss “The Patriot Act and Civil Liberties in an Age of Terrorism” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26 in Room 27 of the Alumni Memorial Building on the University of Tennessee Campus.
The discussion is sponsored by the UT School of Journalism and Electronic Media and the East Tennessee Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. It is free and open to the public.
Anthony Lewis and Jane Kirtley will present their views and participate in audience discussion.
Lewis, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, spent most of his 50-year career in journalism as a reporter, bureau chief and columnist for The New York Times. The author of “Gideon-s Trumpet” and “Make No Law: The Sullivan Case and the First Amendment,” he has written numerous columns and articles on legal subjects. He has been a visiting professor at the Columbia School of Journalism and at Harvard-s Kennedy School of Government.
Kirtley is Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law at the University of Minnesota. She is the former executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press in Arlington, Va. She lectures frequently on First Amendment issues in the U.S. and abroad, and writes the “First Amendment Watch” column each month for the American Journalism Review.
