KNOXVILLE — Paula Apsell, executive producer of the award-winning weekly television program Nova, will speak at the University of Tennessee at 8 p.m. Monday, March 29, in the Shiloh Room at the University Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Apsell’s speech, entitled “What’s Hot and What’s Not in Science Programming,” is this year’s Alfred and Julia Hill Lecture. The Hill Lecture series brings distinguished science communicators to campus to share their thoughts on science, society and the mass media.

The lectures are made possible by an endowment created by Tom Hill and Mary Frances Hill Holton in honor of their parents Alfred and Julia Hill, founders of The Oak Ridger newspaper. The Hill family’s endowment of the lecture series was a gift to the University of Tennessee’s School of Journalism and Electronic Media in the College of Communication and Information.

Apsell joined Nova in 1974, during its first year of broadcast. She became executive producer in 1984.

The program has won every major broadcasting award, including the Emmy, the Peabody, and the AAAS Westinghouse Science Journalism Award. In 1998, the National Science Foundation presented its first-ever Public Service Award to Nova.

Apsell has been honored personally for her achievements by the American Institute of Physics, the Council of Scientific Society Presidents, and the Boston Museum of Science.
